Sports Insurance
Australian sporting programs have insurance to help with your expenses in times of injury and other uneventful circumstances. These include Basketball Australian, Netball Australia, Football Victoria, and more. The insurance cover applies when members and other insured persons/entities are involved in activities that are sanctioned by Victorian sporting programs. These activities include competition, training, social functions, committee meetings, fundraising activities and travel to and from these activities.
Please note that coverage does differ between each sports. The information below provides a rough guideline as to what each may provide. More specific information can be found on their respective pages in the links at the end of the page.
WHO IS INSURED?
Most programs cover Registered Members, Players, Umpires / Referees, Voluntary Workers, Coaches, Trainers, Officials and Employees, Members of the Board of Management and Executives workers.
WHAT IS COVERED?
“Non-Medicare” medical expenses
The insurance covers you for “Non-Medicare” medical expenses. Most policies are for reimbursement only. That is, the member must pay the account and then claim reimbursement under the respective sport’s insurance cover.
The most common “Non-Medicare” expenses include:
Dental
Chiropractic
Osteopathy
Private Hospital Bed & Theatre Fees
Ambulance
Physiotherapy
Benefit
Reimbursement up to 75-80% of Non-Medicare medical expenses, up to a maximum of $2,000-$2,500 per injury (higher limit applies for volunteers up to $5000). Ambulance fees are reimbursable up to $500.
Excess
A $50-$90 excess applies to each injury depending on the sports. Nil excess applies if you claim on a Private Health fund. Nil excess also applies to Ambulance claims.
Conditions
(i) If a member belongs to a private health fund, they must claim from that fund first.
(ii) Non-Medicare medical costs are only reimbursed by this policy if incurred within 52 weeks from the date of injury.
LOSS OF INCOME
This benefit provides cover for insured persons who are disabled from an injury relating to events covered and are unable to work.
This can range from 85-100% of your income up to a maximum of $250 per week whichever is the lesser (higher limits for volunteers and board members can apply i.e. up to $700 per week) for up to 52 weeks from the date of injury.
STUDENT HELP WEEKLY BENEFIT
Pays 80% of actual expenses incurred for home tutorial by a qualified tutor up to $200 per week to assist the full time student for 52 weeks from the date of injury.
